Imitation weapon, fake weapon, or replica weapon: these terms refer here to collector’s items. Start with the historical period. The replicas of antique pistols range from Italian pistols from 1680 to the 19th century, including those from the First Empire and pirates; the antique rifles round out this chapter. The Wild West is in a class of its own; the western weapons : Colt revolvers, Winchester rifles, and holsters. For the 20th century, the modern pistols range from the Luger P08 to the Desert Eagle, and the modern rifles These include, among others, the M1 Garand, the Thompson, and the AK-47.
Next, check the material and the brand. Most reproductions Denix combine zamak parts with a solid wood stock or ABS grips; they can be cocked and fired, but are not capable of firing a round. The Kolser replicas, made of zamak, steel, or brass, have a moving mechanism and often come in a decorative box. Finally, measure the available space: most rifles range from 86 to 110 cm in length and weigh between 2 and 4.25 kg; the Kentucky rifle measures 148.5 cm.
Zamak, the alloy used for the metal parts in most Denix replicas, gets its name from the German initials of its components: Zink (zinc), Aluminium (aluminum), Magnesium (magnesium), and Kupfer (copper). Patented in 1926 by the New Jersey Zinc Company, this zinc-based alloy is suitable for die-casting, which produces delicate parts with complex shapes, accurate to one-hundredth of a millimeter.
Several plays owe their fame to their film adaptations. The Colt Python 357 Magnum with a 6-inch barrel is Rick Grimes' revolver in *The Walking Dead*; it is also available in 2-, 4-, and 8-inch models. The Walther PPK 7.65 remains associated with James Bond, and the John Wayne's 1892 Winchester It can be recognized by its large-loop trigger and the initials "J.W." on the stock.
Most of the antique pistols in the collection feature a flintlock mechanism. This mechanism was developed in France by Marin le Bourgeoys, a court craftsman, between approximately 1610 and 1615; Louis XIII kept several examples in his collection. For nearly two centuries, it remained the standard in Northern Europe, before giving way in the 19th century to percussion systems, which can be found on Italian pistols from 1825 and French pistols from 1832.
A decorative weapon looks its best on a stand or mounted on the wall. The Denix wall mount with a fleur-de-lis design, made of steel, holds pistols, rifles, and swords; for a revolver, a wooden stand is placed on a shelf. Blank cartridges, which contain no explosive charge, round out the display. For maintenance, Ballistol all-purpose oil protects the metal from corrosion and is also suitable for wood and leather.
First, choose a historical period, then build your collection around it: the First Empire, the Wild West, or World War II. Next, add a suitable display stand and a few blank cartridges: a replica on its own is a beautiful piece, but a set already tells a story. And measure the space before ordering, since rifles are often over a meter long.
No. Denix replicas are not functional: many can be cocked and fired, and some have a moving breech or a removable magazine, which adds to their realism, but they are intended solely for collecting and display. Kolser replicas are also collector’s items. Each product description specifies the model’s moving parts.
Most combine metal and wood: zamak parts—patinated, nickel-plated, or gold-plated depending on the model—and a solid wood stock or ABS grips. Some Kolser replicas are made of brass or steel. A metal replica firearm is heavy: about 1 kg for a 6-inch Colt Python, and nearly 3.5 kg for an M1 Garand.
Antique replicas are modeled after flintlock and percussion pistols and rifles from the 17th through the 19th centuries: solid wood stocks, zamak mechanisms and barrels, and sometimes brass embellishments. Modern replicas are modeled after 20th-century designs, often with removable magazines. Western-style firearms form a category of their own.
Metal replicas are restricted to adults. When transporting your replica, always keep it in its box or in a carrying case; never let it be visible on the street. At trade shows and conventions, metal props are usually prohibited, and sometimes even wooden ones: props are generally allowed only for cosplayers during parades.
