Start with the type of room. Decorative katanas Most often feature a 440 steel blade, a lacquered sheath, and a braided handle, measuring about 103 cm; the ones from Kill Bill and The Last Samurai are also available with a wooden blade, weighing around 500 g. Forged katanas are intended for collectors who pay close attention to the type of steel: 1045, 1060, or 1095 carbon steel, or 1065 damask steel. Glowing katanas feature swords from Demon Slayer and One Piece, with an ABS section illuminated by LEDs.
For a replica sword, the collection Fantasy Swords and Daggers features decorative daggers—often sold with their display stands—traditional Chinese swords, and video game collectibles. In China, the straight-bladed sword, the jian, is known as «the gentleman among weapons»; the earliest texts mentioning it date back to the 7th century BCE. Beginning in the Song and Ming dynasties, its guard sometimes took the form of animals, and a tassel was sometimes attached to the hilt—an ornament that is now primarily decorative. Both of these details—a guard adorned with dragons and a cord with tassels—can be found on the traditional Ming Dynasty sword in the collection.
The Blue Sakai Katana Set The Ghost of Tsushima set includes a 103-cm katana and an 80-cm wakizashi, sheaths included: two-tone 440 steel blades, black lacquered sheaths with wave patterns, and a two-slot display stand. Artorias' Sword, from Dark Souls, comes with its own decorative wooden wall mount: 107 cm and 2.3 kg. As for the daggers, the two 35-cm blades of the Cobra Double-Sword Dagger fit together to form a single 100-cm blade.
Beneath the braided cord of a Japanese sword hilt lies a piece of stingray or shark skin, known as same-kawa. It almost always covered the wooden hilt of tachi, katana, and wakizashi; in Japan, the whiter it was, the more valuable it was considered. This cord, the tsuka-ito, was traditionally made of silk; today it is most often made of cotton, as seen on the “Fleur du Japon” decorative katana and the Jin Sakai set, which feature handles with a stingray-skin imitation finish.
When choosing a katana as wall decor, you should select it along with its mount. Wooden wall mounts are available in 1-, 2-, and 3-sword configurations: the 3-seat wall mount displays katanas either on their own or paired with a wakizashi and a tantō. For a sword used as wall decor, the steel stand with articulated arms tucks away behind the hilt. When placed on a piece of furniture, a velvet-lined tabletop stand protects the scabbard. All of these models are featured in Our katana accessories.
For maintenance, The Katana Maintenance Kit Includes a cloth, blade oil, a polishing powder ball, and a small hammer, all housed in a wooden box. For a light-up katana, remove the batteries before storing it for an extended period.
For wall decor, choose a sturdy wall and hang your katana or sword at eye level. Mark the mounting points and check the alignment before drilling, using screws suitable for the wall material: drywall, brick, or wood. Also measure the total length, including the scabbard, since most katanas are over one meter long. And check the tightness of the fasteners from time to time.
Decorative katanas, often made of 440 steel, emphasize aesthetics: a lacquered scabbard, an ornate guard, and a braided handle. Forged katanas feature a blade made of carbon steel or Damascus steel, for collectors who pay close attention to the material. The light-up katana combines a metal blade with an ABS section illuminated by LEDs (two AAA batteries not included).
Choose a suitable mount: a wooden mount, holding 1 to 3 swords, for katanas; a steel mount with articulated arms, for a sword; or a wooden wall plate, which comes with mounting hardware. Some items, such as Artorias’s sword, come with their own wall mount, ready to hang.
A katana is usually between 1 m and 1.10 m long, including the scabbard. A katana with a wooden blade weighs about 500 g, while a light-up or forged katana weighs between 1 and 1.5 kg. Swords vary more widely: Artorias’s sword weighs 2.3 kg, while most fantasy daggers measure between 30 and 54 cm.
Metal replicas are restricted to adults. When transporting your replica, always keep it in its box or in a carrying case; never let it be visible on the street. At trade shows and conventions, metal props are usually prohibited, and sometimes even wooden ones: props are generally allowed only for cosplayers during parades.
