The Winchester replicas are modeled after the under-guard lever-action rifles of the Wild West: the 1860 Henry, the 1873 and 1892 Winchester, and the Mare's Leg, along with other Western-style rifles. Made of metal and wood, and mostly manufactured by Denix, these are decorative pieces for collections, display cases, and reenactments.

Start with the design, which sets the era and the silhouette. The Henry 1860 Rifle It is recognizable by its octagonal barrel and gold-plated breechblock. The Winchester 1873, the most common model, is available in a black finish, an engraved version, or the USA 1873 version. The Winchester 1892, with a round barrel, is more compact: 94 cm compared to 99 to 110 cm for a 1873 model.
Next, choose the mechanism. Most Denix replicas can be cocked and fired: the hammer and trigger are movable. On the black Winchester 1873 rifle, the safety lever ejects the three special rounds provided. Finally, consider the size: a full-size rifle weighs between 2.5 and 2.8 kg, while Mare’s Leg as It Ages, with a shortened barrel and stock, measures 50 cm and weighs 1.5 kg.
Winchester created a prestige series based on its Model 1873. The barrels that proved to be the most accurate in factory tests were fitted with a special trigger and a meticulous finish, and the rifle was sold under the name «One of One Thousand.» Approximately 136 were sold, and only eight «One of One Hundred.» It was this coveted rifle that inspired the 1950 film Winchester ’73, starring James Stewart.
The Engraved Winchester 1873 is the most decorative piece: its brass-finished breech block is engraved with plant motifs, and its lever ejects the three bullets included. As for the 1892 model, John Wayne's Winchester It stands out for its large-loop trigger guard and the initials “J.W.” on the grip. The aged Mare’s Leg, meanwhile, is hand-patinated. For the pieces seen on screen, also check out the Winchesters from Westerns.
This category also includes other rifles from the West: the single-shot 1859 Sharps carbine, the trappers’ Kentucky rifle (111 or 148.5 cm), and the 52.5 cm sawed-off double-barreled rifle.
The Winchester is descended from the Henry rifle. Benjamin Tyler Henry patented it in 1860, after three years of development, and the New Haven Arms Company manufactured it until 1866. That year, its successor, the Model 1866, was released, and the company changed its name to the Winchester Repeating Arms Company. This was followed by the Model 1873, of which more than 720,000 were manufactured through 1923 and marketed under the slogan «The Gun That Won the West,» and then the Model 1892, designed by John Browning, which surpassed one million units.
Weighing more than 2.5 kg per meter in length, a rifle requires a shelf, display stand, or sturdy wall mount, protected from moisture and direct sunlight. Dust it off with a soft, dry cloth, maintain the wood and metal with Ballistol all-purpose oil, and handle the mechanism with care. Our article Why Should You Maintain Your Denix and Kolser Replicas? explains the proper techniques.
As for the outfit, the genuine leather Winchester holster attaches to the saddle like in Westerns. Denix Decorative Balls, made of gold-plated metal, are displayed next to the rifle. Pair them with a replica of a Western-style Colt and a holster or a belt.
For your first Winchester, we recommend an 1873 with bullet ejection: this is the model people immediately associate with the Wild West, and the action of the lever is part of its charm. If space is limited, opt for a shorter 1892 or a Mare’s Leg. In any case, measure your wall before ordering and make sure to use a mount that supports the rifle along its entire length.
No. Denix and Kolser replicas are not designed for shooting: they do not fire marbles, pellets, or any other projectiles, and are not airsoft or air-powered models. Their moving parts—the hammer, trigger, trigger guard lever, and sometimes the ejection port—are designed to enhance the realism of the display.
The 1873 is the longest: 99 to 110 cm and weighing approximately 2.6 kg, with a black, engraved, or brass-finished breechblock, depending on the version. The 1892, which is more compact, measures 94 cm and weighs 2.5 kg, and features a round barrel. Its John Wayne version adds a large-loop lever.
The Winchester models with ejectable bullets come with three special ejectable bullets. For other models, Denix decorative bullets, made of gold-plated metal, are sold in packs of six and measure 3.8 cm: they are meant to be displayed next to the rifle but are not compatible with Winchester rifles designed for ejectable bullets.
Metal replicas are restricted to adults. When transporting your rifle, always keep it in its case or a carrying bag; never let it be visible on the street. At trade shows and conventions, metal replicas are usually prohibited, and sometimes even wooden ones: replicas are generally only allowed there for cosplayers during parades.
