How to Choose Your Hand-Forged Katana

Start with the steel. Most of the blades in the collection are made of 1045 carbon steel; the katana from Ghost of Tsushima is made of 1060, the katana Seigi of the Last Samurai in 1095. In these grades, the last two digits indicate the carbon content, in hundredths of a percent: 0.45 % for 1045. The five Kuro Kami katanas feature an 800-layer damascened 1065 steel blade with wavy patterns. The term «Maru» refers to a blade made from a single grade of steel.

Next, take a look at the tempering and assembly. The Justice Fudoshin forged katana Both the Seigi and the other sword feature a hamon created using clay—a true temper line—and can be taken apart for maintenance. The finishes do the rest: genuine stingray skin beneath the cotton braid, color-lacquered scabbards, and steel guards adorned with a dragon.

💡 Did you know?

The hamon is created during quenching. Before heating the blade, the blacksmith coats it with a thick layer of clay on the back and the center, leaving the edge uncovered. During quenching, the edge cools more quickly and hardens, while the spine, which is insulated, cools slowly: the boundary between the two areas defines the hamon. This uneven cooling also gives the blade part of its curvature.

The Must-Haves of the Collection

As for the manga, Zoro's swords are available in versions forged from 1045 steel: the Wado Ichimonji with a white scabbard, the Shusui with a black scabbard featuring pink patterns, the Sandai Kitetsu with a red scabbard, and the purple Enma katana, among the Metal One Piece katana. For Demon Slayer, the Tanjirō's forged katana joins the Metal Demon Slayer katanas.

As for movies, the bride's katana in Kill Bill features an engraved blade, a black-lacquered scabbard with gold trim, and a label bearing the signature of Hattori Hanzo; the swords from The Last Samurai and Highlander—the latter with a dragon-head pommel—round out the display. Outside the worlds of manga and film, the five Kuro Kami are distinguished by the color of their scabbards, and the Ten Ryu bears the blacksmith’s signature engraved on the blade.

📜 A Moment in History

The steel used in traditional katanas, known as tamahagane, is produced in a tatara—a low-lying clay furnace that is fed with iron-rich sand and charcoal for about 72 hours. One batch consumes about 9 metric tons of sand and 11 metric tons of charcoal to produce approximately 2.3 metric tons of steel. Most of the ancient blades analyzed contain 0.5 to 0.7 % of carbon, a carbon content similar to that of 1060 steel.

Displaying and Caring for Your Hand-Forged Katana

A hand-forged katana looks its best on a presentation support, whose red velvet protects the sheath. Carbon steel requires more care than stainless steel: wipe the blade as soon as it has been touched, then apply a thin layer of oil from time to time. The Katana Maintenance Kit includes a cloth, oil, polishing powder, and a small hammer in a wooden box. Our Katana Care Guide explains each step in detail.

⭐ Réplique Manga Ciné's Tip

Display your forged katana in a high place, out of children’s reach, on a wall-mounted or desk stand, away from moisture and direct light. Avoid touching the blade with bare hands: the acidity from your fingers can leave marks on the steel. If a mark appears, wipe it off immediately with a lightly oiled cloth.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a Kuro Kami katana and a Fudoshin katana?

The five Kuro Kami knives make a statement with their design: damascened 1065 steel, a hamon depicting Mount Fuji, a gold-lacquered sheath adorned with a dragon, a snakeskin handle, and a carrying case with a satin-lined interior. The Fudoshin Justice and Seigi models embrace simplicity: 1045 or 1095 Maru steel, a hamon created with clay, and a black lacquered scabbard.

What's included in the box set for a forged katana?

Depending on the model, the katana comes with a sheath, often in a box or a small case with a display stand, and sometimes with a care kit and a certificate of authenticity, such as the Justice Fudoshin or the Ten Ryu—the latter of which is shipped unassembled. The exact contents are listed on each product page.

What are the typical dimensions and weight of a forged katana?

The forged katanas in the collection range in total length from 102 to 108 cm, with blade lengths ranging from 68 to 73 cm. They weigh approximately 1 to 1.5 kg, with the heaviest being the one from Ghost of Tsushima. Check the length on the product page before choosing your display stand.

Can you buy and carry a forged katana?

Metal replicas are restricted to adults. When transporting your katana, always keep it in its box or sheath; never carry it in your hand on the street. At trade shows and conventions, metal replicas are usually prohibited, and sometimes even wooden ones: replicas are generally only allowed for cosplayers during parades.
