The Hunt for Gollum: What's the Status of the Movie Today?
*The Hunt for Gollum* has now entered a very concrete phase. After several years of announcements and rumors, principal photography began in New Zealand in July 2026 [3]. Andy Serkis has once again donned his motion-capture suit and, most importantly, reprised his iconic role as Gollum. This time, however, his role goes much further, as he is also directing the film.
Peter Jackson also remains at the heart of this new adventure. He is producing the project alongside Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, two key figures from the previous adaptations. As such, *The Hunt for Gollum* is clearly part of the cinematic legacy established since *The Fellowship of the Ring*.
The cast is also beginning to reveal the scope of the project. Ian McKellen will reprise his role as Gandalf, while Elijah Wood will return as Frodo. Lee Pace will also reprise his role as Thranduil. However, Aragorn will be played by a different actor: Jamie Dornan will portray Strider, taking over from Viggo Mortensen for this period in the Ranger’s life.

How did the project *The Hunt for Gollum* come about?
For several years, Peter Jackson’s cinematic journey through Middle-earth seemed to have come to an end. However, in February 2023, Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema announced a new agreement with Middle-earth Enterprises. The agreement calls for the development of several films inspired by the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. A new door to Middle-earth had thus just opened.
The real turning point came in May 2024. Warner Bros. announced its first new project centered on Gollum. Most importantly, three legendary names immediately returned: Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens [2]. The goal became clear. The studio wanted to expand the cinematic universe created with *The Lord of the Rings* and *The Hobbit*, rather than start entirely from scratch.
However, Peter Jackson will not be returning as director. The role has been entrusted to Andy Serkis, the longtime portrayer of Gollum. This choice is by no means insignificant. Serkis has known Sméagol’s mannerisms, contradictions, and psychology for over twenty years. Furthermore, he now has solid experience behind the camera.
The project then takes a particularly intriguing turn. Rather than another massive war, *The Hunt for Gollum* is expected to explore a more intimate story. Aragorn pursues Gollum, while Sauron’s shadow is already spreading over Middle-earth. Behind this seemingly minor pursuit, however, lies one of the events that will lead directly to the War of the Ring.
A return to Middle-earth, but not just a nostalgic trip down memory lane
Peter Jackson remains very involved as a producer. However, he wants to give Andy Serkis true creative freedom as a director. In particular, he explained that Serkis was uniquely qualified to tell this story from Gollum’s perspective.
This approach could set the film apart from previous installments in a significant way. In fact, Peter Jackson referenced *Joker*, the film by Todd Phillips, to explain some of his thoughts on the project. The comparison mainly concerns the psychological exploration of a character already familiar to audiences. It does not, however, mean that *The Hunt for Gollum* will seek to replicate the world or tone of *Joker*.

Why Gollum? The story Tolkien hid between the lines
At first glance, devoting an entire movie to the hunt for Gollum might seem surprising. Yet this hunt plays a crucial role in the story of the One Ring. It begins long before Frodo leaves the Shire and, above all, reveals why Gandalf absolutely had to find Gollum.
After Bilbo’s departure, Gandalf becomes increasingly suspicious of the origin of his mysterious ring [4]. The ring hardly shows any signs of aging, and its former owner, Gollum, had kept it for centuries. However, the wizard still has no definitive proof to identify the object.
Gollum thus becomes a key witness. He knows the Ring, its power, and, above all, the circumstances surrounding its discovery. Gandalf therefore enlists the help of Aragorn, an excellent tracker and a great connoisseur of the wild lands. Together, they attempt to track down the creature. However, it has long since disappeared.
And while Aragorn is searching for him, Gollum makes a terrible mistake: he approaches Mordor.
When Sauron discovers the words «Sacquet» and «Comté»
Gollum eventually falls into the hands of Sauron's servants. Imprisoned and then tortured in Mordor, he reveals two pieces of information that will change the fate of Middle-earth:
«Sacquet» and «Comté» [4]. .
Sauron then realizes that his Ring still exists. More importantly, he now has a lead that will enable him to track down the one who possessed it after Gollum. This revelation plays a direct role in the events that will later lead the Nazgûl to the Shire.
Gollum eventually left Mordor, however. Aragorn then picked up his trail and pursued him through particularly dangerous territories. The chase finally led the Ranger to the Dead Marshes, at the very gates of Sauron’s realm.
That is where Aragorn finally managed to capture the man Gandalf had been searching for so long.
And, paradoxically, capturing Gollum might just be the easiest part of his journey.
For Aragorn must now bring his prisoner back alive across a vast expanse of Middle-earth.
How long did Aragorn actually search for Gollum?
Finding Gollum was not a simple mission that took just a few weeks. On the contrary, Tolkien describes a long, difficult search carried out intermittently. It even took Aragorn to the most dangerous regions of Middle-earth.
In the year 3009 of the Third Age, Gandalf and Aragorn actively resumed their hunt for Gollum. They then continued their search intermittently over the next eight years. However, no leads have yet emerged that would allow them to track down the creature permanently. [6]
Aragorn then travels through the wild lands, pushing his search ever farther east. Meanwhile, Gollum comes dangerously close to Mordor. He eventually falls into Sauron’s hands, before regaining his freedom. [6]
The situation changes in the year 3017 of the Third Age. Aragorn finally tracks him down and ventures into the Dead Marshes, on the borders of Mordor. It is in this sinister region that he finally manages to capture Gollum. [5] [6]
However, the Ranger's mission is still far from over.
Aragorn must now take his prisoner back north alive. However, Gollum proves to be cunning, hostile, and particularly difficult to control. The journey that begins at this point could very well provide much of the adventure for the new film.
📊 An eight-year hunt… but not without a break
8 years of research, from 3009 to 3017
In 3009 of the Third Age, Gandalf and Aragorn resume their search for Gollum. However, Tolkien notes that they continue this hunt «from time to time» over the next eight years. So Aragorn does not spend eight full years tracking the creature. [6]
The search spanned several periods and gradually led the Ranger farther and farther east. Meanwhile, Gollum continued his own wanderings and eventually even reached Mordor.
It is only by 3017 ...until Aragorn finally tracks him down. His quest then leads him to the Marais des Morts, at the very gates of Sauron's realm. He finally manages to capture the man Gandalf has been searching for for years. [5] [6]
Thus, these eight years allow us to gauge the scope of the story that Tolkien largely left out of the picture. Above all, they offer The Hunt for Gollum a vast narrative world to explore.
From the Dead Marshes to Mirkwood: Aragorn and Gollum’s Incredible Journey
Capturing Gollum is, after all, only the first challenge for Aragorn. Now, the Ranger must lead his prisoner to the kingdom of Thranduil, far to the north. Above all, he must leave the outskirts of Mordor without attracting the attention of Sauron’s servants. [7]
Aragorn therefore chose a particularly cautious route. He first made his way northward through the Emyn Muil, then reached the Anduin near Sarn Gebir. From there, he continued his journey northward, staying mostly on the western bank of the river. [7]
His journey then took him near Fangorn, and then beyond the Clearwater. Aragorn also passed near the borders of Lothlórien. The Elves learned of his passage and eventually relayed the news to Gandalf. [7]
However, the Ranger avoids Moria and continues northward. He finally reaches the vicinity of Carrock, that gigantic rock already mentioned in *The Hobbit*. There, a new challenge awaits him: he must still cross the Anduin with Gollum.
The Beornings are said to have helped Aragorn and his strange prisoner
Near Carrock, the Beornings help Aragorn cross the Anduin. The Ranger can then continue his journey with Gollum toward Mirkwood. [7]
This detail is particularly interesting for *The Hunt for Gollum*. Indeed, the Beornides are part of the people associated with Beorn, a character we’ve already met in *The Hobbit*. The new film therefore has an excellent narrative reason to revisit this part of Middle-earth.
However, a word of caution: the appearance of the Beornings in the film has not yet been confirmed. Tolkien assigns them a role in this journey. However, Andy Serkis and the screenwriters are free to show this episode, adapt it, or simply allude to it.
Finally, Aragorn reached Thranduil's Woodland Realm. He then handed Gollum over to the Elves, as had been agreed upon with Gandalf.
After years of research and a grueling journey, Aragorn's mission seems to have finally come to an end.
For Gollum, on the other hand, the trouble is just beginning.

Tolkien provides a rather delightful detail about this strange expedition. While crossing the Anduin, Aragorn must prevent Gollum from using the river to escape.
The Ranger would then have tied his prisoner to a piece of wood, before swimming across the river while dragging him along with him. [7]
This brief scene shows just how complicated a mission it was to bring Gollum back alive. It could also make for a memorable moment if Andy Serkis decides to adapt it into The Hunt for Gollum.
When does *The Hunt for Gollum* take place in the *Lord of the Rings* timeline?
To understand *The Hunt for Gollum*, we must go back a few years before the War of the Ring. At that time, Frodo was still living peacefully in the Shire. Yet, elsewhere in Middle-earth, the events that would lead to his departure had already begun.
In Tolkien’s writings, Aragorn captures Gollum in 3017 of the Third Age. He then takes him to the Woodland Realm, where the creature is entrusted to Thranduil’s Elves. Gandalf is then able to question him and obtain valuable information about the Ring. [5] [6]
A few months later, however, Gollum managed to escape. This escape was by no means a mere accident. Sauron’s forces attacked the Elves who were guarding him, allowing the creature to vanish into the Black Forest. [5] [6]
Meanwhile, Gandalf continues his research. In particular, he consults the archives of Gondor and discovers Isildur’s account of the Ring. Little by little, the final pieces of the puzzle fall into place. [4] [6]
The real War of the Ring is approaching.
Could the movie change Tolkien's timeline?
This is where things get particularly interesting.
In the books, seventeen years pass between Bilbo’s 111th birthday celebration and Frodo’s departure from the Shire. Tolkien thus has a very broad timeframe in which to recount Gandalf and Aragorn’s quest. [6]
Peter Jackson’s trilogy, however, significantly shortened this period. On screen, viewers get the impression that events unfold much more quickly after Bilbo’s departure.
However, *The Hunt for Gollum* is part of the same cinematic universe.
Andy Serkis and the screenwriters will therefore likely have to work with two different timelines: Tolkien’s particularly detailed one and the much more condensed one from Peter Jackson’s films.
That is also why it would be risky to say at this point that the film will follow the hunt from 3009 to 3017 exactly as described. Tolkien’s texts clearly serve as its source material. However, the timeline could be adjusted to remain consistent with the six previous films.
💡 Did you know? Frodo isn't 33 when he leaves the Shire
In The Fellowship of the Ring, Frodo receives the Ring at 33 years old, at Bilbo's birthday party in 3001. However, his real journey did not begin until 3018.
So Frodo was 50 years old when he finally left the Shire. [6]
Peter Jackson virtually erases those seventeen years of waiting in his adaptation. This difference could become significant for The Hunt for Gollum, since the story of Aragorn and Gollum takes place precisely during this period.
Who Will Star in *The Hunt for Gollum*? The Confirmed Cast
*The Hunt for Gollum* will clearly have the best of both worlds. On the one hand, several iconic faces will return to Middle-earth. On the other, new actors will portray characters who are either familiar or created specifically for this story.
Unsurprisingly, Andy Serkis will reprise his roles as Gollum and Sméagol, while also directing the film. More than twenty years after his performance in the original trilogy, the actor will once again step into the shoes of a character who has had a profound impact on his career. [10]
Two other comebacks should particularly delight fans of *The Lord of the Rings*. Ian McKellen will reprise his role as Gandalf, while Elijah Wood will once again play Frodo Baggins. Their presence, however, raises several intriguing questions. Indeed, the story told by Tolkien takes place before Frodo’s departure for Rivendell. [10]
As for *The Hobbit*, Lee Pace will reprise his role as Thranduil. His return seems particularly logical. As we saw earlier, Aragorn leads Gollum to the Woodland Realm to hand him over to the Elves. Thranduil could therefore play an important role in this part of the story. [10]
But the most dramatic change is undoubtedly Aragorn's.
Jamie Dornan Will Play Aragorn: Is This the Film's Riskiest Move?
It's now official: Jamie Dornan will play Aragorn, also known as Strider. He will thus take over the role from Viggo Mortensen, whose portrayal remains inextricably linked to Peter Jackson's trilogy. [10]
This choice is particularly interesting, since the film is expected to show Aragorn still living the life of a Ranger. We are therefore a far cry from the crowned king at the end of *The Return of the King*. *The Hunt for Gollum* could offer a closer look at the solitary tracker, capable of surviving for weeks in the wilderness.
Jamie Dornan will nevertheless face a considerable challenge. It’s not just a matter of playing Aragorn. He’ll have to take on a character that Viggo Mortensen has deeply embedded in the collective imagination.
The announcement has, in fact, sparked mixed reactions among fans. Some are already lamenting Mortensen’s absence. Others are looking forward to seeing a different take on a younger Aragorn. [10]
Kate Winslet Returns to Peter Jackson's Universe
Another surprise: Kate Winslet is joining Middle-earth in the role of Marigol. [10]
This cast has a certain unique charm. Long before *Titanic*, Kate Winslet had already worked with Peter Jackson on *Heavenly Creatures*, which was released in 1994. More than thirty years later, their paths are crossing once again on a production overseen by the New Zealand director.
Marigol is billed as a Hobbit. However, we should remain cautious about her exact role in the plot until Warner Bros. reveals more information.
Anya Taylor-Joy will play Seren, a new elf
Since June 2026, another big name has joined the cast: Anya Taylor-Joy.
The actress will play Seren, described as a Sindar Elf from the Woodland Realm. This character has a significant distinction for Tolkien fans: Seren does not appear in J.R.R. Tolkien’s original writings. She was created specifically for the film. [11]
Her connection to Thranduil’s kingdom is likely significant. Seren could play a role during Gollum’s captivity or in the events surrounding his escape. However, at this point, this is merely a narrative possibility and not confirmed information.
Leo Woodall will play Halvard, another character who remains a mystery
Finally, Leo Woodall will play Halvard. [10]
For now, his character remains much more mysterious. His casting was announced along with the main cast, but his exact role in the hunt for Gollum has not yet been clearly revealed.

And what about Viggo Mortensen in all this?
When *The Hunt for Gollum* was announced in 2024, one question immediately came to mind: Could Viggo Mortensen reprise the role of Aragorn?
The actor wasn't opposed to the idea, by the way. When interviewed in 2024, he explained that he had really enjoyed playing Aragorn and said he was willing to return. However, he set one essential condition: his return had to remain believable, given his age and the nature of the character. [12]
For her part, Philippa Boyens also wanted to bring back the original Aragorn. In late 2024, the screenwriter explained that the decision would depend largely on Viggo Mortensen. The team was even exploring the possibilities offered by digital technology to bring back a younger Aragorn. [13]
In the end, the project took a different turn. In April 2026, Andy Serkis confirmed that Viggo Mortensen would not be reprising his role as Aragorn and that the part would go to a new actor. Jamie Dornan was subsequently officially cast as the Ranger.
But the story has a rather nice ending. According to Andy Serkis, Viggo Mortensen supports the choice of Jamie Dornan to succeed him. The former Aragorn has thus given his blessing to his successor. [14]
More than twenty years after *The Return of the King*, Aragorn’s appearance has thus changed. Yet the shadow of Viggo Mortensen’s portrayal will inevitably loom over Jamie Dornan’s first steps in Middle-earth.
Why is Andy Serkis directing *The Hunt for Gollum*?
Entrusting *The Hunt for Gollum* to Andy Serkis may seem like a no-brainer today. Yet his role goes far beyond that of an actor reprising his iconic character. This time, Serkis will be both Gollum and the film’s director. [2]
Peter Jackson could very well have taken the helm himself. However, the New Zealand filmmaker chose to remain a producer. According to him, the story must, in particular, explore Gollum’s psychology and his almost addictive relationship with the Ring. For Jackson, no one knows this character better than Andy Serkis. [15]
This choice, therefore, gives the project a fascinating unique quality. For more than twenty years, Serkis has shaped Sméagol’s voice, movements, and inner conflicts. Now, he will also be able to decide how the audience will discover his story.
Peter Jackson wants to give him true creative freedom. He remains involved as a producer, but he doesn't want to direct the film through Serkis. [15]
Thus, *The Hunt for Gollum* should not simply seek to replicate the original trilogy. The film will remain connected to its visual and narrative universe. However, Andy Serkis will be able to bring his own perspective to Middle-earth.
From Gollum to Director: Andy Serkis Already Knows What Goes On Behind the Scenes
This move behind the camera is by no means a first for Andy Serkis.
During the filming of *The Hobbit* trilogy, Peter Jackson had already entrusted him with directing the second unit. Serkis was therefore involved in creating numerous sequences alongside the main shoot. [16]
Since then, he has directed several feature films, including *Breathe*, *Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle*, and *Venom: Let There Be Carnage*. His return to Middle-earth thus comes after several years of experience behind the camera.
But *The Hunt for Gollum* is, of course, a very special project.
Andy Serkis isn't just returning to a universe he knows well. He is now taking the reins of the world in which Gollum was born on the big screen.
And the first glimpse of the shoot showed this in a rather amusing way.
In July 2026, Warner Bros. released a short video announcing the official start of production in New Zealand. Serkis appears in a performance-capture suit, glances at his script, and then almost instantly assumes Gollum’s characteristic posture before filming begins. [3]
Performance capture for Gollum has come a long way
This may be one of the most interesting technical aspects of the new film.
In the early 2000s, creating Gollum required a particularly complex process. Andy Serkis acted alongside the other actors. However, some of his performances then had to be reenacted in an environment specifically designed for motion capture. [16]
More than twenty years later, technology has advanced considerably.
Serkis now refers to this as «full performance capture.» The actor’s body, face, and voice can be recorded together during the performance. This advancement allows Gollum, in particular, to be portrayed much more naturally alongside the other actors and within the sets. [17]
And this progress could have a particularly interesting consequence: the 2027 version of Gollum will be able to remain deeply faithful to Serkis’s original portrayal, while benefiting from tools that didn’t exist during the original trilogy.
🎬 A director… who also has to become Gollum in front of his own camera
Andy Serkis will have to juggle two particularly demanding roles. He will direct the actors and technical crews while also portraying Gollum himself using performance capture.
The first images from the set, released in July 2026, show Serkis transitioning almost instantly from the director reviewing his script to the crouching creature that audiences have known for more than twenty years. [3]
A dual role that ultimately encapsulates the whole challenge of The Hunt for Gollum : entrust Gollum to the person who probably knows him better than anyone else.
Why is *The Hunt for Gollum* inspired by *Joker*?
At first glance, comparing *The Lord of the Rings* to *Joker* might seem rather unlikely. However, Peter Jackson himself cited Todd Phillips’s film as a source of inspiration for *The Hunt for Gollum*. [18]
However, we shouldn’t imagine Middle-earth transformed into Gotham. The influence Jackson refers to primarily concerns the way in which the psychology of a tormented character is explored while telling his story. [18]
This approach seems particularly well-suited to Gollum. Behind the creature obsessed with his «Precious» lies Sméagol. Yet several centuries of possessing the Ring have profoundly altered his mind, his body, and his relationship with others.
So, the new movie could tell the story of Aragorn's hunt while regularly putting us in the shoes of the one being hunted.
Peter Jackson also explained that the story would be told from Gollum’s internal perspective. The film is therefore expected to focus on his psychology, as well as his addiction to the Ring. [18]
A hunt told from the prey's perspective
This choice could completely change our perception of history.
In Tolkien’s works, Aragorn and Gandalf are searching for Gollum in order to obtain vital information about the Ring. For them, the creature therefore represents a lead that they absolutely must follow.
But Gollum, of course, doesn't see things that way.
From his perspective, he is being pursued. Sauron has captured and tortured him. Gandalf is trying to interrogate him. Aragorn eventually tracks him down and captures him. Finally, Thranduil’s Elves hold him prisoner. [4] [5] [6]
The viewer could thus understand Aragorn’s motivations while also feeling Gollum’s fear and paranoia. This shift in perspective could become one of the main differences from the previous films.
However, one thing remains clear: Peter Jackson has never announced a *Joker* remake set in Middle-earth. His comparison relates to a narrative and psychological approach, not necessarily to the film’s tone, violence, or aesthetic. [18]
Sméagol Before Gollum: How Far Back Will the Movie Go?
Long before he became the creature we know, Gollum was named Sméagol. He belonged to a people related to the Hobbits, who lived near the Fields of Irises and the banks of the Anduin. His life was turned upside down, however, when a simple birthday celebration led to the discovery of the One Ring. [4]
Around 2463 of the Third Age, Sméagol went fishing with his relative and friend Déagol. Déagol fell into the water after being dragged under by a fish. At the bottom of the river, he discovered a shining ring buried in the mud. [4]
Sméagol notices this immediately. That day happens to be his birthday. So he asks for the Ring as a gift. However, Déagol refuses to give him his find.
Sméagol then strangles him and seizes the Ring. [4] This murder marks the true beginning of Sméagol’s long transformation into Gollum.
How did the Ring change Sméagol?
The Ring does not immediately turn Sméagol into a cave-dwelling creature.
First, he discovers that he can become invisible. Using this power, he begins spying on members of his community. He uncovers their secrets and gradually uses his new abilities to his advantage. [4]
However, his behavior quickly becomes unbearable. Sméagol steals, spies, and stirs up trouble. As a result, his family eventually rejects him. His grandmother, who is then the leader of their community, ultimately expels him. [4]
It was during this period that his strange guttural sound first appeared.
The others then began calling him Gollum.
Rejected and now alone, he gradually made his way back toward the mountains. He eventually discovered a cave beneath the Misty Mountains. There, far from the light, Gollum sank into a life that would last several centuries. [4] [6]
More than 470 years alone with the Ring
Gollum obtained the Ring around 2463. Bilbo met him in the Misty Mountains in 2941. This means there were approximately 478 years between the discovery of the Ring and their meeting. [6] [8]
During this long period, the Ring unnaturally prolongs Gollum’s life. His body changes. His memory fades. Above all, his obsession with his «Precious» becomes the center of his existence.
Then Bilbo arrives.
During the events of *The Hobbit*, Gollum loses the Ring. Bilbo finds it and eventually leaves the depths of the Misty Mountains with it. [8]
This loss causes yet another upheaval in Gollum's life. After several years, he finally leaves his cave and sets out in search of the one who took his treasure.
And that decision will ultimately put him on a collision course with Aragorn, Gandalf, and Sauron.
Could Déagol's murder appear in *The Hunt for Gollum*?
That's possible. But there is currently no evidence to support that claim.
Peter Jackson's comparison to *Joker*, however, makes this possibility an interesting one. If Andy Serkis wants to delve deeply into Gollum's psychology, his past could naturally be revealed through memories or flashbacks. [18]
Peter Jackson had, in fact, already shown part of that story.
At the beginning of *The Return of the King*, released in 2003, we meet Sméagol and Déagol before their transformation. Déagol finds the Ring in the Anduin. Moments later, Sméagol kills his companion to take it for himself.
This scene helped explain how Sméagol had become Gollum.
"The Hunt for Gollum" could therefore retell this story from a different perspective. However, the film could just as easily assume that viewers are already familiar with it.
That is precisely where one of the project’s biggest unknowns lies: just how far does Andy Serkis want to delve into Sméagol’s memories?
📊 Gollum by the Numbers
More than 550 years
Gollum's Astonishing Age
Tolkien does not give Sméagol's exact date of birth. However, his timeline allows us to estimate his age.
Sméagol gets the Ring 2463 of the Third Age. He then kept it for about 478 years, until he met Bilbo in 2941. [6] [8]
So when Aragorn led his hunt in the early 3000s, Gollum had already lived through that time more than five centuries.
This extraordinary longevity is not natural. As with Bilbo, possession of the Ring has considerably extended his life.
Where is *The Hunt for Gollum* being filmed? A return to New Zealand
To return to Middle-earth, *The Hunt for Gollum* goes back to where it all began: New Zealand.
Filming officially began in July 2026. Warner Bros. announced this with a first video showing Andy Serkis in a performance-capture suit. The footage concludes with shots of the country’s distinctive mountainous landscapes. [3]
This choice is by no means insignificant. New Zealand shaped the visual identity of both *The Lord of the Rings* and *The Hobbit* trilogies. More than twenty years after *The Return of the King*, Andy Serkis is thus returning to the landscapes associated with Peter Jackson’s Middle-earth.
However, not all of the locations used for *The Hunt for Gollum* are known yet. It is therefore important to distinguish between locations that have actually been confirmed and those that have merely been considered or mentioned online.
And among the venues that have now been confirmed, one of them is sure to delight fans in particular.
Hobbiton Welcomes the Cameras Once Again
Yes, Hobbiton is back.
In July 2026, the famous Hobbiton Movie Set in Matamata temporarily closed its doors. The reason was quite charming: the crew of *The Hunt for Gollum* had taken over the Shire to film new scenes there. [20]
The website later confirmed its participation in the filming. Even more amusing, some members of its team donned the famous hairy feet to appear as extras. [20]
The return to Hobbiton inevitably raises a question: What role will history play in the Shire?
Elijah Wood's confirmed casting as Frodo opens up several possibilities. The film could depict events taking place in parallel with Gollum's hunt. It could also use the Shire as a starting point or as a narrative element.
However, none of these hypotheses has been confirmed yet.
One thing is certain: more than twenty-five years after Peter Jackson’s first shots were filmed, the lush green hills of Hobbiton will once again represent the Shire on the big screen.

Wellington: The Historic Heart of Peter Jackson's Middle-earth
While Hobbiton represents the most idyllic side of Middle-earth, Wellington has long been one of its main production centers.
It was around New Zealand’s capital that Peter Jackson developed much of the cinematic universe of *The Lord of the Rings*. The teams at Wētā were particularly involved in creating the creatures, visual effects, and many other elements that shaped the look of the films.
For *The Hunt for Gollum*, this historical connection continues. Andy Serkis has confirmed his return to New Zealand alongside Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, and the teams at Wētā. [21]
This collaboration is, of course, particularly significant when it comes to Gollum. Ever since the original trilogy, the character has been the result of a close interplay between Andy Serkis’s performance and the digital work created around him.
Wellington thus once again emerges as a key hub in this endeavor.
However, we should remain cautious about Stone Street Studios. The site is currently listed by some film databases as being associated with the production. However, no official announcement has yet confirmed which scenes will be filmed there.
Could Gollum's landscapes regain their role?
New Zealand has a significant advantage for *The Hunt for Gollum*. Some of the landscapes associated with the character already exist in Peter Jackson’s filmography.
In the original trilogy, several scenes featuring Gollum were filmed around Tongariro National Park. The Mangawhero River served as the setting for Ithilien, while the volcanic landscapes of Whakapapa represented Mordor and Emyn Muil. [22]
It was in this region, in particular, that Frodo and Sam captured Gollum before he led them through the Emyn Muil. Further on, the slopes of Mount Ruapehu also helped give Mordor its hostile appearance. [22]
Could we see some of these landscapes in *The Hunt for Gollum*?
The possibility is obviously appealing. After all, the story is supposed to take Gollum back to the borders of Mordor. However, none of these locations has yet been officially confirmed for the new filming.
For now, it’s best to think of them as the historic landscapes of Gollum in Peter Jackson’s universe, rather than as confirmed locations in the 2027 film.
What will Gollum look like in *The Hunt for Gollum*?
More than twenty-five years will have passed between Peter Jackson's first Gollum and the one in *The Hunt for Gollum*. However, the new film is not expected to start from scratch.
Andy Serkis will, of course, once again bring to life the voice, movements, and expressions that made the character instantly recognizable. However, the tools used to capture his performance have evolved significantly since *The Two Towers*. As we saw earlier, Serkis now refers to a true «full performance capture.» [17]
So this will be a rather unique challenge. Gollum will need to remain familiar enough to fit into the same cinematic universe. On the other hand, his design will be able to benefit from more than twenty years of advances in visual effects.
This evolution had, in fact, already begun with *The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey*. In 2012, Gollum retained his iconic appearance, but his face became more refined. His eyes, his skin, and especially his expressions conveyed Andy Serkis’s performance much more accurately.
A more realistic Gollum… but not necessarily different
Technical advances do not necessarily mean that Gollum will completely change his appearance.
On the contrary, one of the challenges will likely be preserving his visual identity. His large eyes, gaunt face, and physique have become instantly recognizable. A transformation that is too drastic could therefore risk creating a disconnect from the previous films.
However, the details could change significantly.
Today, the skin, facial muscles, and even eye movements can convey much more subtle nuances. Above all, «full performance capture» makes it possible to simultaneously capture multiple aspects of Andy Serkis’s performance. [17]
Thus, a frown, a twitch of the lips, or a momentary hesitation in the gaze can directly influence the final performance.
This detail could become particularly important in *The Hunt for Gollum*. The film is expected to delve deeper into Sméagol’s psychology and his relationship with the Ring. [18]
So maybe the new Gollum doesn't need to be any more spectacular.
Above all, he’ll need to be more human when he becomes Sméagol again… and more unsettling when Gollum takes over.
Sméagol and Gollum: Perhaps the real challenge lies in their gaze
Ever since his first appearances, the character has been defined by a fascinating contradiction. Sméagol may seem fragile, almost childlike. A few seconds later, Gollum becomes suspicious, aggressive, and sometimes terrifying.
Andy Serkis has always played on this duality. However, today's technologies could make it possible to convey much more subtle changes.
Eye contact will likely be essential.
In *The Two Towers*, the famous confrontation between the two characters was already based on Serkis’s performance, editing, and facial animation. More than twenty years later, simultaneous facial and body capture could make these transitions even more natural. [17]
This fits perfectly with the approach announced for the new film. Peter Jackson wants to explore Gollum from the inside, particularly his psychology and his obsession with the Ring. [18]
As a result, the major technological advancement in *The Hunt for Gollum* might ultimately become almost invisible.
If it works, viewers shouldn't have to wonder anymore how Gollum was created.
He should just believe that he's there.
What story will *The Hunt for Gollum* actually tell?
We now have a much better understanding of the context of *The Hunt for Gollum*. However, one key question remains unanswered: which part of the story will the film actually tell?
What Tolkien Tells Us… and What the Movie Could Explore

Tolkien’s writings offer several possibilities. Gollum goes through a particularly tumultuous period before the War of the Ring. He leaves the Misty Mountains, searches for Bilbo, approaches Mordor, falls into Sauron’s hands, and then continues on his way. Aragorn eventually captures him and takes him to the Woodland Realm. The film's title naturally suggests that this hunt will play a central role. However, Andy Serkis and Peter Jackson seem to want to go beyond a simple chase across Middle-earth.
The announced approach centered on Gollum’s psychology could make it possible to tell the story of this period from several different perspectives. [18]
Thus, Aragorn could be the hunter without necessarily becoming the story's sole hero.
And Gollum could be the prey… while still remaining the true heart of the film.
Is Gollum's capture enough to fill an entire movie?
On paper, the story seems relatively simple: Aragorn searches for Gollum, picks up his trail, and eventually captures him.
In Tolkien’s work, however, this hunt spans several years and includes many areas that remain unexplored. [6]
That is precisely where screenwriters have considerable leeway.
Tolkien outlines the major milestones. However, he does not recount every day Aragorn spent in the wilds. We are therefore unaware of many of the encounters, dangers, and detours that may have marked his quest.
The film can thus explore new adventures while staying true to the core elements of the original story.
This freedom may also explain the inclusion of characters created specifically for the film, such as Seren. The Sindar elf played by Anya Taylor-Joy does not appear in Tolkien’s writings. [11]
His role remains unknown. However, his presence already shows that The Hunt for Gollum will probably not simply reproduce word for word the few passages devoted to this hunt.
Could Sauron become a much more immediate threat?
Before being captured by Aragorn, Gollum experiences another, far more terrifying imprisonment.
He falls into Sauron's hands.
Under torture, Gollum eventually reveals two pieces of information that will have immense consequences: «Sacquet» and «Comté». [4]
We've already discussed this episode before. However, in a film told more from Gollum's perspective, this period could take on a completely different dimension.
Sauron wouldn't even need to appear on screen constantly. His presence could loom over the story through his minions, Mordor, and, above all, the trauma he inflicted on Gollum.
This plotline would also add more suspense to Aragorn's hunt. He wouldn't simply be searching for a creature lost in the wilderness.
He would be pursuing someone whom the Enemy is also looking for.
Which characters will play a role in the hunt for Gollum?
Aragorn would naturally play a major role in *The Hunt for Gollum*. However, in the story Tolkien imagined, his pursuit does not take place alone.
Gandalf is the inspiration behind much of the research on the Ring. Thranduil then welcomes Gollum into his kingdom. New characters could also be introduced into the areas Tolkien left open.
Finally, Frodo’s announced return raises a much more mysterious question. At the time Aragorn was searching for Gollum, the Hobbit was still largely unaware of the danger approaching the Shire.
The film therefore features several characters who can directly link this hunt to the events of *The Lord of the Rings*.
Gandalf: The One Who Wants to Make Gollum Talk
Gandalf isn't looking for Gollum out of mere curiosity. The wizard is trying to understand the origin of the ring that Bilbo had possessed for years.
Together with Aragorn, he takes part in the search to find the creature. When Gollum is finally captured, Gandalf is able to interrogate him in the Woodland Realm. The answers he receives are particularly disturbing. [6] [8]
Gollum was Sauron's prisoner. Most importantly, the Enemy now knows two crucial words: «Sacquet» and «Shire.».
Ian McKellen's return could therefore fit perfectly into this part of the story. However, we still don't know how significant Gandalf's role will be in the script.
One thing, however, seems particularly interesting: through Gollum, Gandalf might gradually come to realize that Bilbo’s Ring poses a far greater danger than he had imagined.
Thranduil: Gollum, a prisoner of the Woodland Realm
Lee Pace's return is also directly linked to Tolkien's writings.
After his capture, Aragorn took Gollum to the Woodland Realm. The creature was then entrusted to Thranduil’s Elves, who were to keep watch over him. [7] [8]
This captivity, however, is very different from ordinary imprisonment. The Elves sometimes allow Gollum to go outside under supervision and climb trees.
This relative freedom will ultimately have significant consequences.
During an attack led by Sauron's minions, Gollum takes advantage of the chaos to escape. [9]
The Woodland Realm could therefore offer much more than just a brief appearance by Thranduil. It could become the setting for a significant part of the story, especially if the film chooses to show Gollum’s interrogation and subsequent escape.
Seren: What role will the new elf play?
He's probably one of the hardest characters to predict.
Seren, played by Anya Taylor-Joy, is portrayed as a Sindar Elf associated with the Woodland Realm. Most importantly, she does not appear in Tolkien’s writings and was created for the film. [11]
However, his membership in Thranduil’s people gives him a particularly interesting role in the story.
Could she have been involved in keeping Gollum under surveillance? Could she have been present during his interrogation? Could she have been involved in his escape?
All of these possibilities are consistent with the context. However, none of them has been confirmed at this time.
Seren could, in fact, allow screenwriters to develop the events of the Woodland Realm without directly altering the journey of a character created by Tolkien.
For now, she remains one of the major unknowns in *The Hunt for Gollum*.
Frodo: Why does he reappear in this story?
Elijah Wood's return may be even more intriguing.
In Tolkien's timeline, Frodo remains in the Shire for much of the time that Gandalf and Aragorn are conducting their search. He therefore does not participate directly in the hunt for Gollum.
However, Elijah Wood is listed in the cast. [10]
There are several possible narrative approaches. Frodo could appear in an introduction, an epilogue, or a narrative that frames the main story. The film could also revisit certain events from his perspective.
But at this point, none of these possibilities has been confirmed.
His presence, however, has an obvious narrative impact. While Aragorn is searching for Gollum, Sauron has already learned of the existence of «Sacquet» and «the Shire.».
Frodo might thus come across as someone who is still unaware that an immense threat is slowly closing in on him.

Is there a book called *The Hunt for Gollum*?
No. J.R.R. Tolkien never published a book titled *The Hunt for Gollum*. The film expands on events mentioned in *The Lord of the Rings* and in several other works set in Middle-earth.
So this is not an adaptation of a novel with that title, but rather a cinematic adaptation of a story that Tolkien had already written.
When does *The Hunt for Gollum* take place in the saga?
Chronologically, *The Hunt for Gollum* takes place after *The Hobbit* and before the main events of *The Fellowship of the Ring*.
However, Peter Jackson had already shortened certain periods in Tolkien's timeline. The exact place of the new film within the cinematic continuity will therefore need to be clarified.
Do you need to have seen *The Lord of the Rings* before watching *The Hunt for Gollum*?
It probably won't be essential for understanding the story. However, having seen *The Lord of the Rings* will certainly help you better appreciate the characters, the settings, and the many connections to the original trilogy.
For fans, the film should above all shed new light on events that have so far only been touched upon on screen.
Is there a movie called *The Hunt for Gollum* that was released in 2009?
"The Hunt for Gollum" is also the title of an independent fan film released in 2009. [19] This unofficial project was already an adaptation of Aragorn's hunt for Gollum.
So it shouldn't be confused with the new movie set in Peter Jackson's cinematic universe.
