Reales de 8 had a face value of 8 reales in Spain. The coins were often physically cut into eight pieces, or sometimes into four quarters to make a smaller change.
The value was calculated according to the weight in precious metal. The coin of eight traveled widely in the coffers of Spanish ships for several hundred years, and became the common booty of pirates. A coin of eight was worth 8 silver reals (8 times 1 real).
Pirates tried (and often succeeded) in stealing precious cargoes of gold, silver and other products from the New World, which presented an ideal business for its abundance of islands where pirates could take refuge. This gold currency was a favorite of freebooters.
