House of the Dragon is an American television series created by George R. R. Martin and Ryan Condal. It is a prequel to the Game of Thrones series, developed by the HBO television network. It is an adaptation of the novel Fire and Blood by George R. R. Martin.

The story takes place almost 200 years (172 years from Daenerys' birth) before the time of Game of Thrones. As King Viserys reigns over Westeros, the question of his succession looms large. With no male offspring, who will succeed him? With no fewer than 10 adult dragons under their control, the Targaryens have long dominated the Kingdom of the Seven Crowns.

The series focuses on the Targaryen dynasty, and recounts the events that led to a civil war called the Dance of the Dragons, which resulted in the loss of the dragons and the beginning of the fall of House Targaryen.
